Ancient Olynthos<\/h1>\n<\/header>\n

Olynthos, for a century, was the most important city of Halkidiki. Its foundation is lost in the mythical times. Archaeological findings show that on the site of the city there was a remarkable prehistoric settlement, which was continued by the city of classical times.<\/p>\n

According to mythology, Olynthos was the son of the Thracian king Strymon and was killed in a lion hunt. After his death, his brother Vrangas built Olynthos in his honor. According to another version, Olynthos was the son of Hercules. We have specific testimonies about the city from the 7th BC century, when it was captured by the Bottians.<\/p>\n

In 480 BC, the Persian general Artabazus captured Olynthus and almost completely destroyed it. He massacred all the inhabitants he captured in the marshes between Olynthus and Potidaea.
After the destruction, he handed the city over to the Chalcidians, and thus Olynthus became a Chalcidian city. After the Persian wars, it became a member of the Athenian League. Around 440 BC, it defected from the Athenians and, at the instigation of Perdiccas of Macedonia, many coastal Chalcidian cities settled in Olynthus. Thus, the city was strengthened to the point that, according to the historian Xenophon, it could maintain a military force of 20,000 men.<\/p>\n

The overall impression of the city is less interesting than that of other large cities of its time: the houses are modest, there are no large public spaces and everything is mediocre, except of course for the few villas, which are located outside the main city. The city was fortified with a brick wall, on which the first rows of houses \u201crested\u201d. The city\u2019s market is located in a free space with a portico, which was located in the neck that connects the old and the new settlement.<\/p>\n
