Petralona Cave

The Petralona cave, decorated with stalagmites and stalactites, is located at the western foot of Mount Katsikas and at an altitude of approximately 300 meters above sea level.

Systematic excavations of the Cave began in 1965 by the founder of the Hellenic Anthropological Society, anthropologist Professor Aris Poulianos. His research proved that Archanthropus is approximately 700,000 years old, making him the oldest European.

Among the fossils of extinct animals are lions, hyenas, bears, panthers, elephants, rhinoceroses, megahorns, bison and various species of deer and equines, as well as 25 species of birds, 16 species of rodents and 17 species of bats.

It is an important attraction not only for Halkidiki but also for all of Greece and is located a few kilometers from Παραλία Διονυσίου και το Green Paradise.
